Cuba celebrated the 95th birthday anniversary of Benny More, who has been described as the greatest Cuban popular singer of the last century.
The city of Cienfuegos, El Benny’s hometown, will pay him tribute on the final day of the Sixth International Rumba Festival Timbalaye-2014.
A statue of the musician stands in Cienfuegos, 250 km southeast of Havana, and will be the point of meeting for the closing activities of Timbalaye.
People from Cienfuegos will also go on a traditional pilgrimage to Morea as tomb at the local cemetery, which has been declared a National Monument.
Moré mastered most genres of Cuban music, such as the son montuno, mambo and bolero. Along with the famed Trío Matamoros, he became very popular in Havana in 1945 and right after his international career started in Mexico. Over the next two decades he would perform in Venezuela, Colombia, Panama, Jamaica, Haiti and the United States.
He died of cirrhosis of the liver on February 19th, 1963. He worked until his last day. (Prensa Latina)
