330 US Evacuees from Egypt Arrive in Turkey
A total of 330 United States citizens, who were evacuated from Egypt following unrest and violent protests in the North African country, arrived in Istanbul late on Monday.
Officials from US Consulate General in Istanbul set up a help desk for the US citizens at the Ataturk International Airport and guided them through the airport.
“We spent five days in Cairo… and it was like a nightmare,” an American woman told reporters at the airport. “The hotel where we were staying was surrounded by military and tanks… tons of military,” she added.
Chaos in the country and mayhem at the Cairo airport caused hours of delays for evacuees.
Around a million protestors are expected to gather on Tuesday in Cairo, Egypt’s capital city, in an attempt to oust President Hosni Mubarak from his 30-year rule.
More than 100 people were reported to be killed in protests that began on Jan. 25.
