The boss of Britain’s largest hotel and restaurant group has accused the government of a ‘systemic failure’ to take the tourism industry seriously.
Alan Parker, chief executive of Whitbread – the owner of Premier Inns and Costa Coffee – said Britain’s place at the top table of the world’s tourist destinations is under threat from emerging nations and needs a new strategic vision.
‘Tourism has been a great British success story and we do punch above our weight but we could be doing so much more,’ he said. ‘I’m not looking for government handouts but some recognition of the industry’s contribution.’
Parker called on Chancellor Alistair Darling to bring back tax breaks on hotel developments, to help restore dilapidated tourist spots including some of Britain’s run-down beachfronts and town centres.
