There is a wide range of hotels for summer holidays and the range can sometimes be overwhelming. / The best hotel in the world
A current ranking now reveals which hotels are particularly worth a visit – even if a holiday is affordable for very few.
The travel magazine “Travel & Leisure” has again asked its readers which, in their opinion, are the best hotels in the world. From October 25, 2021 to February 28, 2022, the nominated hotels could be evaluated in the categories room/furnishings, location, service, food and value for money, with a total of 100 points per accommodation. The 100 best hotels have now been announced and one popular holiday region has done particularly well: Italy!
According to the readers of Travel & Leisure, here and in India there was the second largest selection of first-class accommodation with eleven hotels each. Only the USA did better with 19 excellent hotels – although this could also be due to the fact that “Travel & Leisure” is a US magazine.
The best hotel in the world: The Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco in Italy
With an overall score of 99.25, which is hard to beat, the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco in Italy ranks first among the best hotels in the world. In fact, the property took first place in two other rankings: Best Resort Hotels in Europe and Best Hotels in Italy. “We couldn’t be more honored to be named the #1 Best Hotel in the World. This award shows how special the hotel and the destination have become,” said hotel director Mirko Marchi in response to the award. But what makes this hotel so special?
The size and location of the Rosewood Castiglion del Bosco are particularly convincing. It is set on five thousand hectares in the heart of the UNESCO-protected Val d’Orcia Natural Park in Tuscany, near the town of Montalcino. According to “Travel & Leisure”, the hotel creates a mix of tradition and modernity. For example, in addition to an old terracotta church and a traditional winery, there is also a modern spa, tennis courts and a cooking school. The centuries-old property has a total of 42 suites and 11 villas, each with its own private pool. However, if you are already thinking about packing your suitcase, you should know that a stay in the best hotel in Italy is anything but cheap. The price per night starts at 1200 euros per person and night in the high season, the villas cost up to 19,800 euros per night depending on the equipment and travel time.
Places 2 to 5 / The Grace Hotel Santorini in Greece
With 99.22 points, the Grace Hotel Santorini, part of the Auberge Resorts chain, came second in the ranking. According to “Travel & Leisure”, its advantage is above all its location: the hotel is on what is said to be the quieter side of Santorini. You’d find the same “iconic, whitewashed architecture” here, but bypass the crowds. The hotel has 20 accommodations ranging from 50 to 400 square meters depending on whether you choose a deluxe room, suite or villa. The resort, which was recently redesigned, also offers a spa and an infinity pool. The room prices start at around 1000 euros. At just under 6,600 euros per night, the villa is almost cheap compared to the other award-winning hotels.
The Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi in the Maldives
With 99.11 points in third place, the Waldorf Astoria in the Maldives is a hotel classic. Both the hotel chain and the Maldives are known as a particularly high-quality, but also high-priced travel destination.
The Waldorf Astoria Maldives Ithaafushi consists of 119 villas in the middle of the sea. According to Travel & Leisure, “dedicated butlers” also offer a special service. The hotel can also pay for it. A night in a suite with a double bed costs around 2000 euros, the villas with three rooms up to 25,000 euros.
The Pickering House Inn in the United States
Fourth place went to a charming and, compared to the other winners, down-to-earth hotel. It was built in 1813 and completely renovated four years ago: the Pickering House Inn in the small town of Wolfeboro in the US state of New Hampshire. The award as one of the best hotels in the world is “definitely the best fourth birthday gift we could have imagined,” according to the hotel’s website. Located near Lake Winnipesaukee, the Pickering House Inn offers ten individually designed rooms. The breakfast from head chef Jonathan Hudak also receives special praise.
The One&Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives
Two hotels shared fifth place with 98.93 points each. One is the One&Only Reethi Rah in the Maldives, located on one of the largest islands in the North Malé Atoll. At the resort, vacationers can choose between oceanfront villas and beachfront villas. Depending on the equipment, the prices vary from 1400 euros to 6700 euros per night.
The Royal Mansour Marrakech in Morocco
Another “old acquaintance” lands in the same place among the best (and above all most expensive) hotels in the world. The Royal Mansour Marrakech offers 53 private riads on 12 hectares, a spacious outdoor pool and a Michelin-star restaurant. However, the luxury hotel is also one of the most expensive in the world. Depending on which riad you choose, a night can cost up to 40,000 euros.
